Chess Resources

No matter where you are in chess, you can always get better. And with the right resources, getting better at chess can be both fun and simple. To help get you better at chess, here are some of our favorite free resources.

Chess Websites

Chess.com:

A fantastic go-to spot for any motivated chess fan is the online training platform chess.com. This online platform attracts millions of chess players from all over the world and currently has more than 7 million members.

Chess.com allows you to easily find opponents at your level, no matter whether you are a total beginner or a strong grandmaster. You can choose from a ton of different time controls from 1-minute bullet to 5 minutes blitz to 60-minute games and even correspondence games where you have several days to make a move.

As a bonus, while playing games on Chess.com it’s not unlikely that you’ll stumble across chess giants such as Magnus Carlsen or Hikaru Nakamura who also frequently play training games on Chess.com. A leaderboard with over 3 million users gives you the chance to compare your playing strength to other users.

On top of all that, you can use chess.com on your mobile device with apps for both Android and iOS. This enables you to play games wherever you are – sitting in the crowded tube on your way to work, lying on the beach in summer, or in a full waiting room.

Lichess.org

A second promising website to go to for chess tactics training is lichess.org. The website provides a variety of online play modes as well as training features.

Apart from the opportunity to play standard chess games with diverse time controls, you can choose between 8 different chess variations such as Chess960, Atomic chess or Three-check chess making it possible to combine chess training with a lot of fun.

Chess24.com

Chess24 is currently one of the most popular websites to play chess games online. The website offers pretty much everything a chess player needs: There is not only a large Playzone – which allows you to play against an opposition of any level – but also many more opportunities for training.

You can play chess with various time controls, participate in different tournaments and find new friends to play against regularly in the lobby. On top of all that, chess24 has a regularly updated leaderboard which allows you to always keep an eye on various states.

Additionally, Chess24 has a great user-friendly interface. The chess playing website has a great coverage of live tournaments with many outstanding commentators.

Like Chess.com, the Tactics Trainer does not tie you to a computer, as you can download the app and use all the services on your phone.
